Description

HESTIA - the goddess of the fire, the patron of the hearth , the daughter of Cronus and the Rhea, the sister Zeus and Hera; never left Olympus, worshipped in every house.
A flame of the bonfire was her attribute. In the Rome equated with Vesta.

The Hestia cult had origins Proto-Indo-European. It is presumably one of the oldest European deities.

Hestia was first natural-born (and first swallowed down) with Cronus child. Name of the goddess, both in Greek as well as the Latin, means the hearth. This hearth since time immemorial accomplished the significant role in the ancient society. At first as a matter of expediency they were caring for holding the fire, which it was not easy to light. With time, the hearth , became the mystical symbol of the bond and the safety of the family. Above the hearth and more widely - above the homestead - exactly a Hestia goddess was watching. Staying on Olympus, she also watched the main hearth of Olympians over. Hestia differed widely from the majority of other gods. For first she vowed the virginity, she didn't have the own family, although she looked all families after in world. Entire life so was lonely and devoted to her vocation. A fact that Hestia almost wasn't present in the mythology was the second difference. She didn't have own myths - several times was only remembered so to speak "when the opportunity arises" of different Gods.

A hallowed custom ruled, that if anybody, even a fugitive or the beggar, he sat down on the edge of the hearth , he devoted himself to the Hestia care and Zeus. He could then ask hosts for the shelter which they weren't usually refusing. Hestia was also a patron of housewives. They have often prayed to the goddess waiting for the care in the lifetime and after the death. Driving out of the house people were praying for the happy journey, and going back they were thanking for the happy return. Every newborn baby which finished 5 (or 10) the day of the life was carried around the hearth and Hestia given back up to the care. For this ceremonial ceremony (amphidromia - "run around") naming the child accompanied. Only then it became the member of a family. Hestia didn't need temples or altars. For her every house was a temple, and with altar – every hearth.

Sometimes however the city or the administrative district held the eternal fire, protecting all inhabitants in the town hall or the different public building. On its guard high office workers, performing priests as stood. In the Athens such a fire was on fire in Prytaneion, on the area of the Agora.

Greeks have rarely carved statues for the Goddess or they painted likenesses for her. On these few, Hestia was shown as the serious woman, with the lenient look, exuding calm, in the long robe of the color of the fire.
